Caffeine is pretty much essential for medical school. Trust me, I have tried to avoid caffeine and coffee for a long time, but in med school I finally caved. You know when you just underestimate your study time and you find yourself only halfway through your checklist at midnight, but with no energy to power through. Or when you have an 8am lecture, but your body is still in vacation mode so you can’t stay awake during class… needless to say, we’d love to say we don’t need it, but we do, we really do.
Okay, so now we have to drink something, energy drinks are too much, tea is not enough, and we settle for coffee. However, you’re a newbie coffee drinker, so you can’t just hop straight to black coffee, because it tastes horrible (sorry to all my black coffee lovers out there)! Now the tasty coffee comes with a price, more expensive, more sugar, more calories, and not as much caffeine.
Since, I am not an experienced coffee consumer, I decided to start with the most basic coffee of all, Starbucks. Not don’t get me wrong, I have tried a couple other places like Dunkin Donuts (which is phenomenal, but with no zero choices) and from a gas station (which was a terrible experience and would not recommend), but in the end I always came back to Starbucks. Starbucks is mainstream, but let’s face it, their sole focus is coffee and they have close to perfected it, plus they have great customer service!
So I have rambled a lot, but I am really writing about the best drinks to try if you are a first time coffee drinker or if you have a love-hate relationship with coffee because of the taste. This is my opinion, and everyone has different preferences, but I would love to hear about your thoughts or favorite places/drinks in the comments! Here are a few of my favorite drinks in order from most liked to least liked, but I love them all!
- White Chocolate Mocha
I feel like this drink does not get enough press. It is WAY better than the PSL and is also available year round. It is my go-to, and a Starbucks classic. I’ve tried this drink at DD and it is great there too! The taste is sweet, but not to sweet, and kinda rich. This drink tastes amazing both iced and hot, but I love it better iced! WCM and I are a match made in heaven, to be completely honest. I even took a BuzzFeed quiz and this was the drink that matched my personality!
- Salted Caramel Mocha
I would describe this as a more chocolatey form of the white chocolate mocha. I really don’t taste the caramel in this drink, and it is super sweet. I wanna say it is one of the sweetest drinks I have ever had from Starbucks, but still a fave. This drink to me is better hot instead of cold, because if you drink it hot, you won’t get that super sweet sensation it has when it cools down and I feel like you can taste more of the caramel when it’s hot. The salt taste is very faint and only stands out if you’re drink is not stirred.
- Pumpkin Spice Latte
PSL, #PSL, #basic, #fall, #pumpkiniseverything, let me know if I’m crazy, but am I the only one who doesn’t taste the PUMPKIN in this drink. Don’t get me wrong, I love this drink, I really do, but it is slightly overrated. It is seasonal, it is festive, but it kinda tastes like a lot of the other drinks. In the frappuccino form, I know for a fact that you cannot distinguish its taste from others. Nevertheless, the PSL is a favorite and makes me feel festive when I drink it. Despite this roast, not gonna lie, I bought this drink every other day in the fall.
- Smoked Butterscotch Latte
Last but not least, a retired but resurrected favorite, the butterscotch latte. I love butterscotch. I always ate the little butterscotch chew candies when I was younger. This drink is good if you want a sweet drink, but not the impending diabetes diagnosis. It is sadly seasonal, but I am not sure what season butterscotch is actually for. Butterscotch as a syrup is a little heavy so if you get the drink, make sure you stir before you sip (it can get stuck at the bottom).
