Early Bird Catches the Worm – Tips for Waking Up Early

This semester, our school hit us with that 8am clinical correlations lecture, and I was totally caught off guard. However, someone, by the beautiful grace of God, I have always been on time and actually usually 20 minutes early to class, like it is actually a miracle. I am here to give you some tips on how to make this work for you, if you have that 5am surgery rotation, rounding at 7am at the hospital, or you are just not a morning person – I’ve got you covered!

  • Put your alarm across the room

Guys, I know you will hate me for this, but you have to! This will almost always ensure that you get up because you have to move. Once you get up, might as well stay up, so now you have climbed the first mountain.

  • Plan your outfit the night before

This will minimize your stress when you get up because you are already ready to go! your clothes are set up, so just shower, brush your teeth, and get going (and breakfast of course)!

  • Take a shower when you wake up

Some people are night showerers, I get that, but it’s so much easier to wake up when you have hot water running in your face. A shower will have you feeling refreshed and ready to start your day.

  • Sleep in complete darkness

This is a good tip, and you might wonder “well doesn’t everyone do that”?, but truth is actually a lot of people don’t. Turn off your bathroom light, your closet light, any lights that could shine in while your sleeping. Then, when those beautiful rays from the sun shine in your window, you are being awaken by natural light, which is supposed to help wake up and stay awake!

  • Workout in the morning

Lol, I really should not give advice that I don’t take, but this one is a very good tip (so I’ve heard). Set a morning workout, doesn’t have to be long even 15 or 30 minutes will do, it’s all about blood flow. This is good for two reasons: 1) you are awake and moving because you got up to work out 2) you just worked out so now you are happy to start your day because you were so productive already! = WIN-WIN

  • Jump out of bed (literally)!

Haha, this one is funny, but it’s a no-brainer! If you jump out of bed you have enough energy to get out of bed and since you probably landed on your feet, you’re one step close to the bathroom to get ready! Makes sense, right?
